There is an old saying:
Pictures speak a thousand words, which is best illustrated in the
medical field, where billions of dollars are spent on medical imaging research
and equipment. An Israeli company has taken medical imaging to a whole new
level by inventing a pill a person can swallow that contains an actual camera.
The camera pill, made by Given Imaging, photographs
the inside of the small intestine to detect polyps, cancer, or causes of
bleeding and anemia, which is something the endoscopic examinations can not do
because that technology can not transverse the 20 or so feet length of the
small intestine. The camera capsule, on the other hand, is designed to take
photos of the entire small intestine, enabling doctors to see areas that the
endoscope cannot reach.
The pill-camera device,
called the Given Diagnostic Imaging System, contains a camera, lights,
transmitter and batteries which last about eight hours. The FDA has cleared the
device, and study results showed that the camera pill is safe, without any side
effects. This is one of many Israeli medical technologies used to save lives
world wide. |
