Poster: Extreme Firefighting Around The
World |
Israel was among the first
countries to send Firefighters to assist Greece in 2007 to battle the worst
fires in living memory. The death toll has reached 64; dozens of villages have
been destroyed and thousands of square miles of forest and olive groves have
been burned in many different areas of Greece. 140 villages are without
electricity, and clouds of smoke are visible on satellite photos.
51 of Israel's most experienced firefighters landed in
Athens and were directed to ancient Olympia to help local crews, working in
shifts round the clock. Amir Levy, spokesman for the Upper Galilee Fire
Department, is one of the firefighters helping in Greece, and he described
walls of flame unlike any he had witnessed before.
The Israeli firefighters volunteered to go to Greece, but were not alone. An
organization called Friends of Israel Firefighters (www.foif.org) raises money to bring customized
wilderness fire engines to from the US to Israel. These small yet agile
mini-pumpers are being built to Israeli specifications have the power of much
larger fire engines to fight small fires in areas otherwise not accessible by
larger vehicles, thus making it easier to contain fires before becoming out of
control. |
