Poster: Research & Development |
Universities, in conjunction
with the Israel Science Foundation, is a predominant source of independent
competitive basic research in Israel which links universities to business, thus
bridging gaps seen in other countries.
The large
number of patents taken out by Israel's universities is one measure of the
effectiveness of the relationship between the universities and industry. In
2002 for example, the percentage of civilian expenditures in R&D as a
percentage of the GDP outpaced the western world, including that of the USA,
UK, Japan, France, Canada and several other countries. (Source: Israel Ministry
of Foreign Affairs)
In fact, Israel's large
reservoir of qualified personnel is primarily responsible for its scientific
and technological accomplishments. Israel has an astounding 24% of the civilian
labor force having 16+ years of schooling, and this percentage is expected to
rise dramatically, which will significantly affect Israel's scientific and
technological achievements for decades to come. |
